Mob Set Two Banks Ablaze After MOPOL Shoots Tanker Driver Dead in Apapa, Lagos

An angry mob of trailer drivers on Tuesday set ablaze diamond and sterling bank branches at Creek road, Apapa, Lagos on Tuesday.

Trouble reportedly started when a mobile policeman (MOPOL) attached to the Diamond bank branch killed a trailer driver in an attempt to force him to move his truck from the front of the bank.

He immediately fled the scene and ran to a Sterling bank branch to escape being lynched but was caught by security operatives who refused to hand him over to the mob.

Irked by their refusal to hand him over, the mob burnt down the Sterling bank branch.

They were reported to have also set the diamond bank ablaze as they felt the MOPOL could be hiding in there.

As at the time of this report, the bank workers who escaped the scene were seen returning to their offices to pick up their belongings.

Several computer sets, split units of AC, ATMs counters and several other properties of the banks were torched by the fire.

Policemen from Rapid Response Squad, anti-riot squad and Area B command, as well as operatives from the Nigerian Navy Ship BEECEOFT have been deployed to the scene of the incident.
