Jehovah Witnesses Church Banned By Russian Supreme Court For Being An 'Extremist Group'

A supreme court in Russia presided over by Justice Yuri Ivanenko has banned Jehovah's witness church from the country after it found the Christian organisation to be an 'Extremist group'

The court also ordered that the church's activities be eliminated and its properties forfeited to the government.

According to the independent, the ministry of justice had ordered the JW's administrative centre with over 175,000 members to be shut down over 'extremist activity' -- a ruling that was upheld by the supreme court today.

The sitting judge, Ivanenko in his ruling said "The Supreme Court has ruled to sustain the claim of Russia's Ministry of Justice and deem the 'Administrative Center of Jehovah's Witnesses in Russia' organization extremist, eliminate it and ban its activity in Russia,"

"The property of the Jehovah's Witnesses' organisation is to be confiscated to the state revenue," Justice Yuri Ivanenko added.
